The „Spitzberg“

Napoleon Bonaparte visited Passau in 1805 during his campaigns in Europe. In that year, he led the Grande Armée during the Third Coalition War against a coalition consisting of Russia, Austria, and Great Britain. Napoleon and his troops crossed the Danube and advanced through Passau.

It is said that he referred to the hill behind the hotel as the "Spitzberg." Just as many French terms in the Passau dialect were preserved with a "Bavarian pronunciation" (Trottoir, Parapluie, Boeff la motte, etc.) from that time, from then on, the area of the mountain behind our hotel was also called Spitzberg. Spitzbergstraße leads to the highest point of this "rather small" mountain. Perhaps this mountain had a strategic significance. So, what could be more fitting than naming our hotel after the name invented by the famous Napoleon.
